Dear Friends,
I secretly think that COVID-19 was an answer to the prayers for many sleep-deprived, over scheduled, not-a-minute-to-spare parents praying for time to stand-still and for a period of "peace and quiet". I am sure I was one of them acutely realizing that another weekend went by without taking time out for myself or my soul....
However, we might have overdone on the prayers. This worldwide crisis has brought a lot of sadness from people suffering and dying, people loosing loved ones, and economic uncertainty. We might have overdone it because "peace and quiet" does not work well with kids at home 24-7 and parents teaching them while still working from home. But nonetheless we are in it. There must be something positive in all of it. So here is what I see.
I find that the COVID-19 home confinement and social isolation has pulled the seesaw of life abruptly in the opposite direction for many of us: the busy moms and dads, full time parents, full time partners, full time care givers, full time strong women, full time movers and shakers, full time volunteers.
Because of this, I am calling this unique moment in time - The Seesaw Opportunity.
Before the Seesaw, on a normal day I didn’t have time to really think in the way that saddens, inspires, and transforms. I didn’t have time to reminisce, to be present or to dream. When I was free to physically roam the neighborhoods and the world, my mind was in the permanent state of confinement from countless activities, no-room-for-error obligations, schedules and to-do lists.
Now that I am in physical confinement, my mind has the opportunity to really wander the roads unpaved and at times untraveled. The Seesaw of life has drastically shifted, giving us this tremendous opportunity.
I encourage all of us to take advantage of it. It is an opportunity to do good for others, to spread love and warmth to people around you (mostly virtually) with your gifts as a human being, to be introspective about your past, explore your ideas, to dream about your future, and be inspired and inspiring. It is an opportunity to do things with your hands, build, construct, write poetry, and read books. Have the courage and the discipline to make your mind the priority and surroundings the priority and take time to reconnect with what you might have forgotten.
This might be the last time you are given this gift, but what you do with it is up to you.
Take advantage of the Seesaw Opportunity.
Stay healthy. Stay human. Stay Calm.
Go to Hell,
From Ray of Sunshine.
Your insightful comments remind me of what others who were in even more serious confinement found, like Martin Luther King, Jr. and Nelson Mandela. The more their physical lives were circumscribed, the more their mental lives prospered. And we are the richer for their suffering. Talking about rays of sunshine!
